Kinja'd!!!

I posted up the other day with a story of how everything was going wrong with the vehicles I currently have. Well I'm super stoked to say that today, those projects are done and the cars are back to where they started.

Turns out that a piece of the plastic timing belt cover on the Volvo had broken off and lodged itself in the crank timing pulley, causing it to be quite out of time. Retimed it, and now it's running like a charm. Next up: brakes, the wobbly wheel, rear suspension, and whatever is making the 'pew-pew' noise above 20mph.

On the RX8, the saga left off with it not wanting to go into gear and the assumption that either the pressure plate or the release bearing had given out. Welllll... both assumptions were wrong. Turns out that one of the puddles I had driven through during the monsoon we had the other day was deep enough to get water into the vent on the upper passenger side of the bell housing, thus managing to rusting the clutch disc to the pressure plate and flywheel in the mere 4 hours it sat. After prying the clutch assembly apart with the handle of a ratchet and throwing the 20k mile clutch lying in the garage in, it's done. Minus the trans fluid(nowhere that sells MT-90 has been open).

Things I've learned from this week:

deep water can do more than hydrolock an engine

piston engines are hard

spare clutches come in handy

loose things in the timing cover need to be heeded

RX8 transmissions are A LOT easier to drop than Foxbody Mustang transmissions

We've got a new 4.2 to drop into our Wrangler. The plan is to combine bits of the trashed engine and the used donor to create one whole working engine, but we haven't started it yet.

That should prove quite entertaining. I've never done any bottom end work on a engine, but I'm sure that'll change soon with a few projects we have for the lemons car. And rebuilding our first rotary is on the list for sometime in the next two months!
